Chaplain of St Luke’s Church, Ras Al Khaimah

Reverend Nelson Fernandez was born and brought up in Kollam (Quilon), one of the Southern Districts in the State of Kerala in South India, the fourth child of his parents, Michael and Bertha. He finished his schooling in Quilon and after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from St Joseph’s Pontifical College and a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from St Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, he was ordained for the Diocese of Quilon in December 1985. He ministered there for 9 years in different capacities, whilst scompleting a Master’s degree in English. He later taught in an institute in Muscat, Oman.

Reverend Nelson married Sudha in November 1995. After that he then served as a missionary in Eritrea (1997), worked with  Prison Ministries International, lectured in Kottayam and Kerala and served at the Episcopal Church in Asmara (Diocese of Egypt with North Africa) before entering into full time ministry also at the Episcopal Church in Asmara. During the five years  he was in Asmara Nelson founded a church school for the international expatriate community, which he directed until he was forced out of the country in 2005 for being a missionary! His daughter, Divya Grace, was born around this time.

Reverend Nelson joined the Chaplaincy team in July 2006 and served as a locum for nine months before being appointed as Chaplain to Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah in June 2007. After the installation of Reverend Peter Chase at Fujairah in 2009, Reverend Nelson has been focused on the ministry at St Luke’s Church in Ras Al Khaimah and its growing congregation.
